The Essential Ski Packing List (for South Africans who have to fly to the snow!)
1. Passport & Paperwork
Because sadly, you can’t “just wing it” like a road trip to the Drakensberg. Double-check visas, travel insurance (make sure it covers skiing), and your flight details. Snow may be soft, but paperwork is not forgiving.
2. Layers, Layers, Layers
☐ Base Layers: Think “thermal underwear,” not “fancy lingerie.”
☐ Mid Layer: A warm fleece or tracksuit top.
☐ Outer Layer: Waterproof ski jacket & pants. (Not your Woolies puffer—save that for the airport selfie.)
💡 Tip: SA cold ≠ European cold. If you think a Cape Town winter is chilly, wait till your nostrils freeze mid-breath.
3. Ski Accessories
☐ Gloves or mittens (waterproof!)
☐ Neck warmer/buff (scarves love a dramatic exit, usually halfway up the mountain)
☐ Beanie
☐ Ski socks (proper ones—your rugby socks will betray you).
☐ Goggles & sunglasses – unless you enjoy skiing blind and squinty.
4. Après-Ski Survival Kit
☐ Comfortable waterproof shoes (takkies are not advisable)
☐ A cozy jumper for hot chocolate (or glühwein) sessions.
☐ Lip balm & moisturizer—European snow air dries you out faster than a Jozi highveld thunderstorm.
5. SA Comforts
☐ Biltong & Simba Chips (airport snacks cost the price of a second mortgage).
☐ Plug adaptors (your hairdryer will not work on “vibes alone”).
☐ Rooibos tea bags, if you need a taste of home when everything smells faintly of cheese fondue.
6. Tech & Travel
☐ Phone charger & power bank (your mittens make fumbling for outlets a sport).
☐ Travel-sized sunscreen (yes, sunscreen—snow sunburn is real and undignified).
☐ Headphones for the flight (the Alps are far, and SAA isn’t playing your Spotify).
7. Optional but Life-Saving
☐ Hand warmers (little sachets of happiness).
☐ A small backpack for the slopes (snacks > everything).
☐ Travel insurance confirmation (print it—Wi-Fi is a luxury at 3,000m).
✈️ Packing Pro Tips
☐ Wear your bulkiest gear on the plane. Ski boots and jackets double as in-flight pillows.
☐ Leave space for duty-free Toblerone. It’s basically tradition.
☐ Practice zipping your bag at home. If you need to sit on it, you’ve packed too much.
