Travel Insurance for Ski Trips

Travel Insurance for Ski Trips

When planning a ski trip, there is so much to think about, such as flight connections, ski passes, ski school bookings, and making sure you’ve packed enough winter layers to avoid looking like a marshmallow (but still stay warm). Make sure travel insurance is on your checklist. It is simple to arrange and could save you a mountain of trouble later.

Why It Matters
The most important thing is medical cover if you injure yourself while skiing or even just wandering around a ski resort. Nobody wants to think about accidents, but icy slopes don’t care how optimistic you are.

Real story from the slopes:
During my time as a ski guide for a prominent South African ski touring company, I saw firsthand why insurance is critical.
One guest, a confident skier who may have overestimated her abilities, lost control on a red run and broke both her fibula and tibia. She needed hospitalisation and surgery—all covered by her travel insurance.

Another guest didn’t even make it to the slopes. He slipped on black ice while stepping off the bus and tore a ligament in his ankle. His ski boots were still in the luggage hold, but his insurance saved the day.

I’m not sharing these stories to scare you off skiing; injuries were rare. But accidents do happen, and without the right insurance, what was meant to be a once-in-a-lifetime holiday can quickly become eye-wateringly expensive.

What to Look For in a Policy

  • Winter Sports Cover
  • Not all travel insurance automatically includes skiing or snowboarding. Check that winter sports are specifically listed so you’re covered for slope injuries, mountain rescue, and even helicopter evacuation (yes, that’s a thing).
  • High Medical & Emergency Limits
  • Hospital bills in Europe can be astronomical, think tens of thousands of euros. Aim for unlimited medical cover or at least R10 million, plus emergency evacuation and repatriation.

Handy Extras

Look for ski-specific add-ons such as:

  • Trip interruption if bad weather closes the lifts.
  • Equipment cover for lost, stolen, or damaged gear.
  • Liability protection if you (accidentally!) collide with another skier.

Travel insurance might not be the most exciting part of planning a ski trip, but it’s definitely the smartest. A few hundred rand for peace of mind is nothing compared to the cost of a helicopter ride off the Alps or a cast that comes with a five-figure hospital bill.
So, before you start dreaming of hot chocolate in a mountain hut, double-check that your policy covers winter sports.
